| On Saturday 28th August 1954, I spent a full day on Shrewsbury station. I travelled from Birmingham Snow Hill on the 8.10am Birkenhead service, a 6 coach train hauled by 6831 Bearley Grange. I arrived at Shrewsbury at 9.33am and remained until 6.26pm, when 1026 County of Salop, took me to Woverhampton, then 6944 Fledborough Hall onwards for the short run to Birmingham. I therefore had 9 hours on Shrewsbury station. |

| This
was my first ever attempt at recording train workings, and at Shrewsbury
you needed to be in two places at once. Locomotive changes took place at
both ends of the station, and, to have made my records complete, I
should have constantly walked up and down the platforms. Easier said
than done on a busy summer Saturday. As I spent most of the day at the
South/East end of the station, I missed most of the northbound loco
changes.
The highlights of the day were the appearance of 46211 Queen Maud on a service from Crewe and 70052 Firth of Tay working in on the Liverpool-Plymouth service. |

| In 1958, I had another "Shrewsbury spotting day", on 14th June. Although the summer timetable was in operation, it was less busy than in 1954. No doubt things would have "hotted up" in July and August. This time my visit lasted 7 hours. I travelled out on 5966 and back on 4902. I recall that it was an extremely hot day, and that this time I made the effort to record details of all Locomotive changes. | ||

re delay to 11.45am Manchester-Plymouth: This train arrived 7 late at
2.07pm. A coach, intended to strengthen the following Manchester-Cardiff
service, was wrongly shunted on to the former by 4079. It then had to be
shunted off again, and the Plymouth left 33 late.
The highlight of this day was the arrival of 46235 City of Birmingham on the 9.10am Liverpool to Plymouth service. |
