Yorkshire Loco Sheds: 1960 & 1964

 Page 2: 1964

On 11th October 1964, I went on a Warwickshire Railway Society Rail tour from Birmingham to York and Doncaster. It was interesting day out. Firstly the motive power for the tour was Rebuilt Merchant Navy class 4-6-2 no 35007 Aberdeen Commonwealth. And secondly the route on the outward journey included Crich Junction to Butterley and Codnor Park.
And, in addition to shed visits at York (50A), and Doncaster (36A), there was also a visit to the original Railway museum at York and a tour of Doncaster works, which was then in the process of constructing Electric locomotives for the West Coast Main line.

By 1964, Doncaster Works long association with steam had ceased. It was carrying out overhauls to a variety of diesel classes, but principally to Brush type 4, English Electric type 3, and Brush type 2. New construction was solely concentrated on Electric locomotives. However, steam was not totally dead, since the Departmental locos used in the works were class J50 tank locos. Departmental loco no 11 was 68914, no 12 was 68917, no 14 was 68961 and no 16 68976.

At Doncaster station we saw D172, D1511, D1519, D1561, and D356.

Our train left Doncaster at 7.15pm with 35007, and continued via Rotherham, Chesterfield, and Derby, and arrived  Birmingham New Street at 10.03pm after a 15 minute delay at Saltley. It had a long but fascinating day.
