Talyllyn Railway

The Talyllyn Railway was opened in 1865 to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys Quarry to Tywyn for shipment on to the Cambrian Railway. The line also carried passengers. But the Quarry closed in 1947. The Railway continued to carry passengers, but in 1950 the owner, Sir Haydn Jones, died, and prospects looked bleak.

But a group of enthusiasts, lead by Tony Rolt, formed a society to save and run the railway. Since then, great improvements have been made, and the railway has continued to go from strength to strength.

I first travelled on the railway in 1957. But my next visit was not until 1986. And I have been a regular visitor/traveller ever since.

Most of the first group of photographs below were taken in 2002 and 2003, mainly at Abergynolwyn (excellent tea room), at Tywyn Wharf, and Cynfal. Many of my visits have been with Sound Recordist David (Steamsounds) Bailey.
