Date: 29th September 1958
dep: London Euston 2.10pm..R Time
arr: Birmingham New St 4.15pm..3 Early
A week before this run, the days of the 2 hour expresses
from Euston to Birmingham had finished for ever. Extra
time was added to the schedules of all services from
Euston to allow for delays which would arise from the
forthcoming West Coast Main Line upgrading/electrification
This service was the former 2.20pm, now starting at 2.10pm
with 4 extra minutes allowed to Coventry, and another 4
to Birmingham. With a light load and one of Bushbury's
best Jubilee's, the extra time was an embarrasment. The
driver allowed himself the luxury of a modest start from
Euston, then ran normally (normally for Bushbury engines
that is), including an average of 80mph plus for over 20
miles, until a P.W slowing at Hanslope intervened.
We were in Coventry in 92mins 23secs, new schedule 98 mins,
old schedule 94 (Net Time 89.6mins). Arrival at New Street
was 3 mins early, inclusive of a P.W.slowing at Tile Hill.
