By 1965, my personal circumstances had changed. I was now married, and we lived close to Widney Manor railway station. But I was permitted to continue with my Trainspotting and Train timing activities. Indeed Patricia accompanied me on many of them, and had climbed up into a few Bullied cabs on a couple of Eastleigh shed visits. |
So on the morning of Saturday 7th August 1965, we headed south in my other "pride and Joy", my blue Sunbeam Alpine soft-top. It was exactly four years after my previous visit, and we set ourselves up at exactly the same spot. By 1965, times had changed. The steam activity was almost entirely Bullied pacifics with the occasional Standard 5. Warship diesel hydraulics were in command on the Waterloo to Exeter services, and the B.R.C.W class 3 (Cromptons) had a significant share of services on the Bournemouth line. |

SATURDAY 7th AUGUST 1965: BATTLEDOWN FLYOVER | ||
There
were fewer trains than in 1961. Although the Bournemouth and Portsmouth
services had remained largely intact, the West of England services now
ran to Exeter only, on a 2 hourly frequency, and were hauled by Warship
diesels. There was, on Saturdays, one additional Exeter service,
Crompton hauled, to Exeter, and two services to Exmouth, steam hauled.
DMU's had taken over the Reading and Salisbury line stopping
services.
Down trains are listed first. BN is the Bournemouth line, SY the Salisbury line. |

56 Up trains were seen. 29 of these were steam (including 6995 Benthall Hall, U class 2-6-0 no 31800, and a double headed combination of 76011 and 80011). There were 15 diesel hauled trains, including one Brush type 4, no D1574. The remaining 12 services were DMU. The 11.15am Exmouth-Waterloo was hauled by 34015 Exmouth. Timekeeping was excellent on up trains throughout the day. Only a very occasional train was more than 5 minutes late, and many were right time or early. |
