The
West Somerset Railway is now the Uk's number one Heritage Railway.
Running from Minehead to Norton Fitzwarren, it is also the
longest. My first visit was in 1981. Then, the Railway was on the brink
of bankruptcy, with no suitable locomotives, and seemingly little hope.
But it did have 20 miles of splendid scenery, interesting stations, and massive potential.
The turnaround has been achieved by
Dedicated Volunteers, and Excellent Management and Chairmanship of the
Railway. And now further developments are
in progress, which might well result in the restoration of a through
service between Paddington and Minehead.
The photographs below were all
taken during the March 2003 Spring Gala, which was blessed with lots of
sunshine. Arriving at Bishops Lydeard, I did a round trip to Minehead,
pausing for an hour or so at Blue Anchor on the outbound journey, and
for a couple of hours at the delightful Crowcombe on the return.
