THE LLANBERIS LAKE RAILWAY opened in 1971, and runs along the shoreline of Llyn Padarn for 2.5 miles, from Llanberis to Penllyn. It has a gauge of 1ft 11.5in, and in 2003 the line was extended a short distance to Llanberis Village. The trackbed was once the 4ft gauge Padarn Railway, which from 1843 to 1961 carried slate from Dinorwic Quarry, Llanberis, to Port Dinorwic, in the Menai Strait. |
Over the past 20 years or so, North Wales has been a regular Holiday location, and a visit to Llanberis and the Country Park is usually part of the itinerary. The photos below were taken in 2003 and 2004. | ||

THE SNOWDON MOUNTAIN RAILWAY
opened in 1896, and is the only Rack & Pinion railway in Britain. It
climbs from Llanberis (353ft) to Summit station (3493 ft). The journey
takes approximately 1 hour in each direction, and both Steam and Diesel
locomotives are used.
My only journeys to the summit were in 1989, when I travelled twice. The photos below, from 2003, have kindly been made available by D Bailey. Thanks David. |
